Thread: Help: choosing a computer engineering career

For the last six years I've been languishing in software. Last week I got laid off, which is what I needed to force me into a career that I really want: hardware. Unfortunately, I do not know the finer points of what careers there are in that direction, and I was hoping that someone could give me some feedback about what there's a market for. I've always been interested in telecommunications, to give a hint.

I'm a B.Eng in computer engineer. I have almost 10 years experience in software engineering and programming. The only experience I have in hardware not the private sector, so I am aware that this jump would not be an easy one. I live in Montreal, Canada.

Another question I have, is what sorts of search strings should I be using to do this research. "Computer engineer(ing)" and "hardware engineer(ing)" have turned up a lot of false positives and not too many true ones.
